Three rules of Love and logic: Use Enforceable Limits:
The power lies on putting the responsibility on the person with the problem while showing that you care.
Positive approach by turning Garbage statements into Golden Statements.
Uneforceable Statement:"Turn your assisgnemts in on time or you will get a low grade."
Enforceable Statement: "I will give full credit for papers turned in on time."
(see table on page 29 for more ideas)
Provide Choice With Limits:
Human beings have a strong need for control.
Teachers can share control and bring out the best in the students.
Teachers get best cooperation when students are provided with choices.
"Would you all rather wear your coats outside or would you rather carry them?"
*Remember never offer a choice of one you like and one you don't. Be sure to offer choice that you like.
*Delivery is important You are welcome to...Would you rather.... You are free to... What would be best for you...
(see tips on page 31)
A Savings Account Approach is that each student developes a sense of control with the teacher also sharing control by offering the choices in a positive way. This opens the door for teacher to take with drawls fro the account. Example: "Hey team aren't I ususally pretty reasonable?Don't I let you make your own decisions? I do don't I Well it's my turn now. Thank you for understanding."
Applying Consequences with Empathy Empathy and understanding NOT anger and lecture. Consequences + Empathy = Learning
When a teacher shows anger-child gets caught up in the anger-child too busy thinking about adult anger-child has little thought about mistake or plan for new behavior=consequence does not registar in child's mind.
"I am sorry you are cold, Jon." If adult expresses sorrow, child may have significant learning opportunity.
Jon may think tomorrow I will wear my coat."
Personal Note: I am pretty proud of myself.. for using love and logic back when I was the lunchroom monitor and didn't even know!!
